Chesapeake Bay Retriever - The Best Dog Ever?

My wife and I were looking for a dog. Well sort of, I was looking for a dog and my wife was humoring me. We had put out the word to everyone that we knew that we were interested in a puppy. Then the call came, there was a couple that was divorcing and the husband couldn't afford to keep his dog. Our friend was the wife's cousin. She told us that the dog in question was a chocolate lab.

We arrive at the house to meet a Labrador retriever only to be told this dog was a Chesapeake Bay retriever. A few minutes later we were walking out with a dog that we knew nothing about from a breed that we had never heard of. I'm not sure that we ever agreed to take the dog, or that it even came up in conversation. All I know is that the dog was in our car, and she was ours.

I can honestly say that rescuing Ginger was one of the best decisions that I have ever had made for me. Over the past forty years or so, I have owned or interacted with nearly every breed of dog. I have loved mutts and purebreds. I have never encountered a dog as lovable as my Ginger Dog.

For starters, she doesn't do anything destructive. I have never seen her drink from the toilet, eat from the garbage, chew a shoe, or have an accident in the house. She is an excellent guard dog. Her bark is menacing to strangers but her disposition is friendly to all. She is great with children and frail old adults. She is the perfect fit for my family, and we love her.

Ginger is easy to train and would jump through a wall of fire for a treat. She has the occasional issue with cat chasing but we don't own a cat, and to be honest, I don't want to own a cat. One more point in Ginger's favor.

Because of my perfect dog, I have come to know nearly everyone in my neighborhood, and most of the adults and children call to Ginger by name. At least three of my neighbors have taken to carrying treats for her, and they hail her as we pass, so she can claim her goodie. At times it's like I am walking the mayor of this town.

Now I don't claim to have met every dog in the world, and I don't know another Chesapeake Bay retriever, but if Ginger is indicative of the breed, then everyone should try to adopt one.
